How Introverts Can Cope With Depression in the Workplace - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / How Introverts Can Cope With Depression in the Workplace - Introvert Whisperer How Introverts Can Cope With Depression in the Workplace If you suffer from something like carpal tunnel or a bad back while at work, chances are youâll take steps to address the issue. Youâll take proper breaks, stand up and stretch on a regular basis, and get some lumbar back support or a more ergonomic chair. After all, itâs natural to address our physical ailments â" especially in our workspaces, where we need to maintain productivity. One struggle that often goes unnoticed, however, is depression. The long-term, slowly creeping, nefariously subtle onset of depression can make it difficult to identify as an issue in the first place. But once it has taken hold, depressionâs elusive ability to be properly addressed can make it extremely difficult to deal with ⦠and cripple our ability to work for months and even years at a time. Not Alone Suffering from depression isnât an uncommon issue. In fact, depression could take second place as a leading global cause of disability as soon as 2020. In other words, a lot of people struggle with depression. Not only that, but introverts, in particular, are often more susceptible to slipping into a depressed state of mind. The revelation is hardly a surprising one; introverts have busy, bustling minds that are constantly churning. They can easily get lost in unexpressed thoughts and emotions, and their typically creative minds can leave them feeling unfulfilled and uninvested in the humdrum daily happenings that surround them. They also can be perfectionistic and severely critical of themselves, both of which, when unchecked, can feed into self-esteem issues and, consequently, depression. Of course, being introverted isnât the only thing that can exacerbate depression symptoms. It can develop from a variety of other things as well. For example, seasonal changes can lead to seasonal affective disorder. Hormonal fluctuations from things like premenstrual syndrome or post-birth âbaby bluesâ can intensify depression for women as well. Anxiety and stress, in general, are also common culprits. When life throws stressful events our way, they can often be difficult to process. Sometimes, depending on the individual and the cause of the stress, it can blow over quickly and everything will go back to normal. However, if our brains get stuck in overdrive â" an easy thing for an introvert â" it can seriously affect our mood and predispose us to depression. Coping With Depression in the Workplace Whatever the cause, once depression has taken hold, it can be intensely difficult to break free. This is compounded by the stigma associated with mental health, which can prevent workers from seeking mental health resources and support. But that doesnât mean itâs impossible to address it. In fact, there are quite a few ways to actively combat depression as you go through your workday. Drink Tea Studies have shown that drinking green tea can have a positive effect in the fight against depression symptoms. It has also been linked to reward learning â" the idea of following a positive experience with a positive response â" which, in turn, can also directly impact depression. In other words, green tea is a win-win in more ways than one. Take a Mental Health Day Mental health days are the cognitive equivalent of a sick day, and theyâre growing in popularity as more workplaces acknowledge the importance of tending to their employeesâ mental health as well as their physical ailments. Itâs a trend that employees should take full advantage of. Being able to tap out for a day or two in order to tend to your mental state can be an excellent way to combat workplace depression. Analyze Your Thought Processes Of course, if you take a day to rest your mind, you donât want to spend it stewing over depressing thoughts. Whether youâre taking a mental health day or not, itâs important to also make sure to take the time to analyze and address your thought processes. The good news here is that introverts have an advantage: Theyâre typically more practiced in the realm of cognitive analysis since they spend so much time thinking and pondering. This gives them a leg up on identifying bad thought processes and cognitive distortions. The critical factor here, though, is that you make yourself willing to identify shortcomings and incorrect thoughts without simply allowing it to dogpile on your self-esteem issues. When taking the time to analyze your thoughts, make sure to keep a positive mindset and look for ways to improve your mental state rather than simply finding more reasons to be depressed. Donât Give Up on Appearance It doesnât matter if youâre attending a networking event or getting ready to work from the couch all day â" if youâre struggling with depression, itâs critical that you make an effort to make yourself presentable. If you actually take the time to get dressed, brush your teeth, and tend to your overall appearance, it will naturally help promote positive feelings about yourself. Get Some Sunshine Sunshine is an age-old prescription for depression. Itâs important to understand, though, that you may need regular and prolonged treatment for weeks to feel the full effects of this one. If you can get some daily time in the sun, it shouldnât be long before you start feeling a difference. Studies have shown that âlight therapyâ has been effective for as much as 70% of those fighting against SAD symptoms. Take Breaks Taking breaks is an important part of any workday. Itâs already proven to boost productivity, but it can also help fight depression at the same time. Not only does this give your mind an important rest, but it allows you to stretch, get some exercise, and even seek out some sunlight or another cup of green tea. Gaining a Deeper Understanding As a final piece of advice, remember that youâre not alone in your struggle. As you try to implement various ways to relieve your depression symptoms, rest in the fact that there are countless others quietly struggling by your side. The plain truth is, everyone fighting depression is searching for a solution to their problem. Yet, no one will ever create the âperfect formulaâ that answers every conundrum that depression presents. And itâs okay to not have those sudden, life-changing answers. Rather, try to focus on small but significant changes. Sooner or later, youâll begin to feel the shackles of depression shake loose and a more positive mindset become the norm once again. There are lots of courses available online that claim to teach you Hindi, but you should really do your research before paying for an online course.See what other people have said about the course, whether it offers any contact time with a tutor remotely, and check whether the course is able to teach you at the language level you need. For instance, you donât want to book onto an online Hindi course for intermediate learners if youâre not even familiar with the Hindi alphabet! As an alternative, you could look to use an online tutor to provide you with one on one Hindi lessons from the comfort of your home. Using sites such as Superprof, you can search for Hindi tutors that are happy to offer online lessons, and set a learning schedule that fits around your life. You could even ask your tutor to focus on particular topics. Equally, if you'd like to start by learning key Hindi words and phrases, a tutor should be able to incorporate this into your learning schedule.Even if youâre not a fan of online tutoring, you can still find tutors that are happy to provide lessons in person or in a group setting, such as during a workshop, in a location near to you. DNA Diagram Online Biology Tutors Tutorpace
DNA Diagram Online Biology Tutors Tutorpace DNA is the basic hereditary material of organisms .It is seen in the cytoplasm as nucleoid and plasmids in prokaryotes and located inside the nucleus in eukaryotes. DNA is the hereditary material through which characters are transferred from one generation to the next generation. It acts as the blue prints for the cell. The sudden change happening to the DNA is called mutation which results in alterations in the behavior of the cell. Watson, Crick and Wilkins described the molecular arrangement of DNA .They were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1962 for the discovery. The proposed double helix model of DNA resembles a spiral ladder. It is made up of two polynucleotide chains paired by their nitrogen-containing bases. Two strands of alternating phosphate groups and deoxyribose sugars form the rail of the ladder. Paired bases, held together by hydrogen bonds, form the steps of the ladder. The nitrogenous bases are of two types-Purines and pyramidines. The two purines are Adenine and Guanine and the two pyrimidine are Cytosine and Thymine. One purine always pairs with one pyrimidine. Adenine always pairs with thymine and vice versa, and cytosine always pairs with guanine. The adenine and thymine pairs by two hydrogen bonds, cytosine and guanine pairs by means of three hydrogen bonds. The sugar and phosphate units in the DNA helix therefore build up the phosphate backbone of DNA. It is in a specific way the twisted molecules are arranged, one strand is arranged in the 5 to 3 direction while the complementary strand is arranged in the 3 to 5 direction. The two strands are antiparallel to one another.
Improved Performance through Better To-Do Lists
Improved Performance through Better To-Do Lists Improving Academic Performance In this article I want to discuss two key elements of achieving improved academic performance (or performance at work or in any given area of your personal life, for that matter), and how a simple but powerful system for managing your to-do list can address each element: Ensuring you never forget about an assignment, and always have enough time to plan and prepare in advance Completing any given assignment with a confident, calm, low stress demeanor The first point above is pretty simple. If you show up to math class and have forgotten to complete your homework or prepare for a quiz, your grade is going to suffer. If your boss asks you to do something at work and you forget all about it until 12 hours before itâs due, the work you complete will be of a much lower quality than it could have been had you prepared and planned in advance. Iâll spare the reader more examples, because itâs probably a relatively obvious point. The path to addressing the first point above usually flows through the tried and true method of keeping a calendar and using a to-do list. By writing down all the things you need to do, itâs much less likely youâll forget any given item, and most of us get a very good feeling from crossing things off of a to-do list. I read a book a few years ago which changed how I think about to-do lists called âGetting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivityâ by David Allen. Mr. Allen doesnât bash to-do lists, they are an important part of his system for becoming more productive. The MyGuru To-Do list matrix, which Iâll discuss in a few paragraphs, borrows much from Mr. Allenâs thinking about how to create your own personal system for keeping track of all the things you need to do to succeed at school, at work, and at home. However, what I found most interesting about the âGTD Systemâ as itâs often called, has to do with point 2) above; getting things done with a confident, calm, low stress demeanor. Allen describes how, and I find this intuitively very true, when you keep too much information in your head, you get overloaded. Youâre never quite sure if youâre forgetting about something, and youâre constantly reprioritizing. At any given point in time when you might be able to relax, or you should be focused on your spouse, or your coach, or your teacher, your mind can easily wander towards the long list of items which you need to accomplish. This can be surprisingly stressful, and lead to low quality work, studying, and even strained relationships. By having some system, even if itâs really simple, for writing everything down and prioritizing, you allow your mind to relax, and stop trying to use its power remember facts and simple things you have to do. Instead, brain power can be focused on solving complex problems and thinking critically and creatively on any given thing. MyGuruâs To-Do List Matrix By clicking here, you can download our free âTo-Do List Matrixâ productivity tool. Itâs an extremely simple Microsoft Word-based tool that can help anyone organize all of their tasks at work or school, medium and long term goals and projects, and basic âto-doâ list items. In the above video, I describe how to use the matrix, but itâs pretty simple. The steps include: Categorizing your life into separate areas, each with their own list of activities you need to accomplish. For students, their classes, sports teams, clubs, etc. make good categories Keeping separate columns for the things you need to do today, this week, or this month⦠..and then crossing out items, or moving them left and right, as you prioritize or deprioritize Keeping a separate area for longer term goals and projects youâd like to accomplish, but which you arenât currently working on One huge benefit of the matrix is that you can step back and get a holistic view of everything you have to do for the next month or so, starting with today. Youâd be surprised at the reduction in stress youâll feel when you are confident that you have everything covered. It will go a long way towards ensuring you do your best on any given item, whether thatâs preparing for a test or performing in a big game. About the Author Mark Skoskiewicz is MyGuru's founder. Financial Lessons for College Bound Students - Private Tutoring
Financial Lessons for College Bound Students BobbiM Apr 24, 2013 Today we welcome John Gower, who is knowledgable about all things finance (i.e., How to Pay for College). In this article, hell share with you some tips on how to manage your money before you enter college and especially while youre in college. As high school seniors prepare to head to college, the prospect of independence is near. However, that independence might not be as hands-off as they (or you) would like. Managing your childâs expenses while they are living at home is quite different from doing so while they are in a dorm room halfway across the country. Before the big move-in day, consider these tips for steering your soon-to-be college freshman towards a life of financial independence and success. 1. The basics: Staying in the green If you have not done so already, help your student open a basic checking account. Many banks offer accounts targeted to students with no minimum balance or maintenance fee. The account you open does not necessarily have to be at the same bank you yourself frequent. A better gauge of which bank to pick may be the proximity to the campus your child has chosen to attend. Finding an account with the lowest fees and having easy access to an ATM for cash withdrawals ought to be the driving concerns, as most else can be managed online. Tuition and housing costs aside, there are still a number of expenses that necessitate the use of a checking account. The occasional weekend trip, basic personal expenses, or a work-study job on campus are a few of many activities that will force your student to start some sort of budget management habits. Teaching your child how to manage his or her checking account without incurring overdraft fees is a great stepping-stone for the future. 2. Money management: No excel worksheet needed The average student loan debt for a graduate in 2012 was around $27,000. Whether or not your childâs education costs will be covered by loans, grants, scholarships, college savings, or a combination of the above, keeping your student aware and involved in the payment schedule is a place to start responsible financial habits. This does not entail leaving your student out in the cold to deal with complex financial aid issues, but instead giving them some additional responsibility. This can be as simple as making tuition payments themselves (on time) or being in charge of paying for housing each month. If that seems like too much to handle from the get-go, consider instead making out a small home utility bill such as cable or internet in your studentâs name to get the same benefit of building responsible and timely payment habits. 3. Plastic: Put away those scissors for now Due to new regulations passed in 2009, banks are now prohibited from passing out free water bottles, t-shirts, and other goodies on campus as recruiting efforts to get students to sign up for credit cards. So while you donât have to worry as much about your student coming home on their first Thanksgiving back with a pocket full of plastic, there is still good reason for concern. Start building good credit habits early, as when your child reaches the age of 21 they can apply for credit cards without a co-signer. There are a number of benefits to helping your student build credit. A high credit score will help them once they are out in the real world signing apartment leases, getting credit history checked by employers, and applying for car loans. Credit cards of course have their pitfalls. They have the potential to be widely misused if not grounded in the fact that plastic is indeed spending real money that must be repaid in full. In order to fully understand this, your student should know what the terms minimum payments, annual fees, and APRs mean at the very least. If you have allowed your high school graduate to piggyback on your existing credit card, remember to keep a close eye on the account, as anything they do has the potential to hurt your credit history. The tips above are a great starting point for beginning a conversation between you and your college-bound senior. Start small, and most importantly communicate and be available to guide your child as they navigate tricky financial waters in college. John Gower is a writer for NerdWallet, a personal finance website dedicated to helping consumers find the best free checking account, high interest savings account, rewards credit card and more.
4 Powerful Psychological Effects that Change Student`s Behavior
4 Powerful Psychological Effects that Change Student`s Behavior How to get behind the scenes of the brain? How to decrease the level of stress while studying? How our instincts influence our decisions? Next four facts will tell you secrets of the functioning of the human brain. Use them for your studying and you will become a super student! 1) You like others more when they make mistakes. Those who never makes any mistakes seems to be less sympathetic than those who are always right. Perfection creates distance and irritating aura of invincibility. This effect was found by psychologist Elliot Aronson. Its called Pratfall effect. It is the tendency for attractiveness to increase or decrease after an individual makes a mistake, depending on the individuals perceived competence, or ability to perform well in a general sense. So dont be afraid of mistakes, especially while studying. 2) Great expectations create a new reality. If you believe in something one day it will happen. This is called the The Pygmalion effect, or Rosenthal effect. Psychologist Robert Rosenthal studied it. He showed the teachers a list of students who have had a very high IQ test results. But this list does not correspond to reality, Rosenthal chose the names of students randomly. At the end of the year, these students showed significantly better results than the rest. Expectations of teachers for these children were higher, and these expectations created a new reality. 3) The more choices, the less likely we are to be satisfied with them. Do you know what is buyers remorse or buyers regret? You buy something and then begin to regret: it was possible to buy cheaper, or a different model, or to use offers, coupons, discounts. Even when our final decision is quite right we can feel unhappy, if we had too much choice. This is the paradox of choice. The more people see that you need help the lower the probability that any of them will help. If you need help do not look for it in the crowd. When you need to choose your school, university, classes, tasks anything, dont be afraid of choices and remember about paradox of choice. 4) Your mistakes are not as noticeable as you think. Many our feelings are just a game of imagination. Anxiety and self-doubt that you feel every time you make a mistake, in fact, does not reflect reality. People notice our mistakes much less than we think. To check this spotlight effect team of psychologists asked a group of people to wear strange t-shirts for a day. And then estimate how many people noticed it. Estimates of the subjects were two times higher than the actual number. People are focusing on you much less than you think. Knowing this, you can feel much calmer and be yourself in public space. So, dont worry if you make mistakes or if you have some problems with studying. Maybe, its just your brain playing with you. Facebook Plugin Could Change the Way You Read News
Facebook Plugin Could Change the Way You Read News stocksnap.io De, a student at the University of Massachusetts, attended a hackathon at Princeton University this week. The prompt? Develop a technology project in a time period of 36 hours. She also suggested that her teammates build an algorithm that would authenticate real vs fake on Facebook. And she and her team did it. De, Anant Goel (Purdue University), Mark Craft and Qinglin Chen (University of Illinois) created an extension in a Chrome browser that will tag links in Facebook with âverifiedâ or ânot verified.â This is done by considering factors such as âthe sourceâs credibility and cross-checking the content with other news stories.â And if a link isnât verified? The plugin also provides a summary of credible information on the same topic, to help clarify what the actual news is. And of course, it has a fantastic name: FiB. And because the students are still in school and only had a little over a day to create this plugin, theyâve released this as an âopen-source project.â This means that it can be improved by anyone with the experience to do so. And the plugin is available for the masses, but they canât meet the high demand on their own. So FiB isnât currently up and running for everyone to use. But the idea is there, and the content is sure to follow quickly, especially with this type of demand. According to Goel, the idea is that Facebook would eventually work with third-party developers to manage news articles on the site themselves. The Princeton hackathon was sponsored by Facebook, as well as other tech vendors, but hasnât reported reaching out to FiB to help in any way. Same goes for Google, who has been having the same problems. However, both companies have stated that they are going to âtake stepsâ to fix the problem at hand. But the problem is a big one, and itâs only getting worse for the time being. According to BuzzFeed News, over 100 sites made up pro-Trump content (which was traced to Macedonia). In a Washington Post interview of Paul Horner, a fake-news creator, he stated, âI think Trump is in the White House because of me. His followers donât fact-check anything theyâll post everything, believe anything.â And Melissa Zimdars, professor at Merrimack College in MA, also says sheâs seen this problem when her students go to site references for essays. She made the following list, which has gone viral, as a warning to students looking at fake news sites: â¢Watch out if known/reputable news sites are not also reporting on the story. Sometimes lack of coverage is the result of corporate media bias and other factors, but there should typically be more than one source reporting on a topic or event. â¢If the story makes you REALLY ANGRY itâs probably a good idea to keep reading about the topic via other sources to make sure the story you read wasnât purposefully trying to make you angry (with potentially misleading or false information) in order to generate shares and ad revenue. She also stated that it doesnât help when news media uses click-bait headlines and that itâs nearly impossible to distinguish these from fake stories. Thereâs also the issue of whether or not people even know theyâre sharing fake links. According to Paul Mihailidis, teacher at Emerson College: âI donât think a lot of people didnât know; I think they didnât care. They saw it as a way to advocate. The more they could spread rumors, or could advocate for their value system or candidate, that took precedent over them not knowing. A large portion of them didnât stop to critique the information. One of the things that has happened is people are scrolling through [Facebook] and the notion of deep reading is being replaced by deep monitoring. They see a catchy headline, and the default is to share.â However, this isnât the only problem. Thereâs also the fact that people scrolling through their news feed on a social media site arenât necessarily looking to fact-check, which means they arenât looking up stories to verify whether or not theyâre true. So in this way, the plugin is a perfect solution. According to De: âA few days back, I read an article telling people they can drill a jack in the iPhone7 and have an earphone plug, and people started doing it and ruining their phones. We know we can search on Google and research it, but if you have five minutes and youâre just scrolling through Facebook, you donât have time to go verify it.â
